Local dairy farmers wanted to protect their fields from invading developers, so they established Cypress as Dairy City in 1956, emulating nearby cities Dairyland in La Palma and Dairy Valley in Cerritos. Rising land prices following World War II caused dairies to gradually sell out to home developers in the 1960s, and by the 1970s, there were no more dairies.
