San Luis Obispo, also known as SLO, is most well-known for the original Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, named after the 13th century saint and bishop, Louis of Toulouse.
The city was founded in 1772 by Junípero Serra, making it one of the oldest European-founded communities in California. There are many historical landmarks still standing today, such as the Dallidet Adobe, one of the oldest standing buildings in the city, built in 1856.
The city of San Luis Obispo continues to grow, with 34.7% of the population aged 18 to 24, and over 12% of the population under 18.

Geographically, San Luis Obispo is a seismically active area, with a multitude of fault lines nearby, such as the San Andreas Fault.
The area also features a line of hills known as Nine Sisters, which have acted as volcanic plugs. Six of these hills function as recreational parks. The surrounding nature provides many outdoor activities such as surfing, sailing, and hiking.
