The county seat of Orange County, California, Santa Ana, is located in the Greater Los Angeles area on low-lying, level plains with little variation in land elevation. The west end of the city is traversed by the Santa Ana River, which is primarily channelized. The Prado and Seven Oaks dams affect the river's flow, causing seasonal variations. The river has historically produced catastrophic floods in spite of these dams. Santa Ana, with a population of 300,000 or more, occupies an area of 27.5 square miles, of which 27.3 square miles are land and 0.2 square miles (0.90%) are water. With 12,471.5 people per square mile, Santa Ana is the fourth most densely inhabited city in the US.

Warm, dry summers and somewhat precipitated winters characterize Santa Ana's hot, semi-arid climate (Köppen: BSh). Approximately 35 days of measurable precipitation occur in the city year, with an average of 12.54 inches of rainfall falling between November and April. The temperature at Santa Ana's greatest point, on June 14, 1917, was 112 °F (44 °C), and its lowest point, on January 12, 1989, was 16 °F (−9 *C). The "rain year" with the highest amount of precipitation, 34.34 inches, was from July 1940 to June 1941; the wettest "rain year" had just 2.73 inches, from July 2017 to June 2018. 13.99 inches of rain fell in February 1998, the wettest month ever, and 4.69 inches in February 16, 1927, the wettest 24-hour period.

There is no shortage of recreational opportunities in Santa Ana, chief among them being the Bowers Museum, a well-known art and history organization featuring a varied collection and changing exhibitions. Many wall paintings and murals that highlight the history and variety of the area are examples of the city's thriving cultural life. Among the famous sites is the Chiarini Fountain, which represents the center of creativity in Santa Ana. The century-old buildings in the now-industrialized historic Greenville district lend a nostalgic touch. The city is full of parks, plus the proximity to Huntington Beach, Disneyland, and Knott's Berry Farm increases the amount of recreational opportunities. Landmarks like the Artist Village, CSUF Grand Central Art Center, Discovery Science Center, Old Orange County Courthouse, and Santa Ana Zoo add even more depth to Santa Ana's cultural landscape.

The Santa Ana Unified School District, which has 37 elementary schools, nine intermediate schools, and eight high schools among its many offerings, is the main provider of education in Santa Ana. Valley High School, Middle College High School, and Santa Ana High School are a few well-known public high schools. Furthermore, a number of K–8 schools including Mater Dei High School are run by the Roman Catholic Diocese. A wide range of educational possibilities are provided by Santa Ana, which is home to Santa Ana College, California Coast University, the Art Institute of California, Taft Law School, and Trinity Law School. To further enhance its educational landscape, the city is home to the Career Networks Institute College and the Detective Training Institute.

With major freeways including Interstate 5, State Route 22, State Route 55, and State Route 57, Santa Ana has an excellent transportation network that makes traveling around Orange County and the Greater Los Angeles Area easy. Amtrak and Metrolink provide dependable rail services to the city, while Greyhound Lines offers a wide range of bus connections to destinations around the US, Canada, and Mexico. Amtrak and Metrolink use the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center as a hub, while public transportation—including the soon-to-be OC Streetcar—is overseen by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA). Santa Ana is a major transportation hub because of the John Wayne Airport nearby.
