Located in the Los Angeles metropolitan area in southern Orange County, California, the United States, lies the master-planned city of Irvine. Laguna Hills and Laguna Woods are to the south of Irvine, Santa Ana and Tustin to the northwest, Lake Forest to the east and southeast, Costa Mesa to the west, and Newport Beach to the southwest are its neighbors. Additionally, Irvine and Orange are separated by a short stretch of open space to the north by SR 261.

Irvine has a varied climate; in the late spring and early summer, there are cloudy mornings and sporadic drizzle, a condition called June Gloom. The mild, mainly dry weather of late summer and early fall is sometimes affected by humidity from Pacific hurricanes. Due to the Santa Ana winds, winters are mild with sporadic hot, dry spells and sporadic frost. The climate of the city is Mediterranean, and there are distinct microclimates with different weather patterns. Although it is extremely unusual in lower-lying locations, snowfall is occasionally possible in the northeastern Santa Ana Mountains. In 1949, Irvine saw three inches of snowfall; in 1991, there was a tornado. The city's proximity to the seaside contributes to its warm weather and little rainfall.

Irvine is home to some well-liked attractions, such as the Orange County Great Park, where guests may take a panorama air balloon flight. Notable academic institutions including Concordia University and California State University Fullerton are located in the city. There are peaceful green areas for rest and contemplation in Mason Park, Heritage Park, and the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial. Diverse retail and entertainment options can be found in The Market Place and Irvine Spectrum Center, and the city's rich diversity is further enhanced by cultural and religious destinations like the Pao Fa Temple, Islamic Center of Irvine, and Ayn Rand Institute. The University of California, Irvine Arboretum, Mariners Church, and Saddleback Church's Irvine campuses all contribute to Irvine's dynamic and diverse community.

Irvine is home to one of the best school systems in the nation, the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD). Renowned high schools such University High, Irvine High, Northwood High, Woodbridge High, and Portola High are located within the district. Despite being in Irvine, Arnold O. Beckman High is part of the Tustin Unified School District. National rankings for these schools are consistently high. Tarbut V' Torah and Crean Lutheran High are examples of private options. There are substitute K–8 programs offered by Vista Verde and Plaza Vista. Irvine also serves a minor portion under Saddleback Valley Unified and portions served by Tustin Unified. With universities like Concordia University, California Southern University, University of California, Irvine, and others, higher education is well-represented.

Irvine is home to a state-of-the-art transportation system, identified by streets with unique mahogany signage that are connected to the Irvine Traffic Research and Control Center. The city improves traffic flow on major routes like Interstate 5 and Interstate 405 by using traffic cameras and sensors to dynamically change signal timing. Routes A, B, C, and D are commuter shuttles run by Irvine that connect important locations and transportation hubs. Commuter train services are offered by Metrolink and Amtrak, and there are proposals to expand Orange County Line service. Sustainable bike commuting is promoted via a vast network of bikeways that spans 286.4 miles of lanes and 113.2 miles of trails.
