Approximately 15 miles to the northwest of Sacramento, in Yolo County, California, is the county seat and city of Woodland, which is also a component of the Sacramento metropolitan region. In the Californian Central Valley, Woodland is a flat area bordered to the east by the Yolo Bypass and the Sacramento River and to the west by the Capay Valley and the Coast Range. Even though Woodland is a part of the Sacramento Metropolitan Area, it nevertheless has a "small town" vibe, in part because of the distance between it and its nearby communities. It's situated just southeast of the county's geographic center and is the biggest city north of Sacramento along Interstate 5 until Redding.

Woodland has a Mediterranean climate resembling the Sacramento Valley in California, with hot, dry summers and damp, colder winters. January is the wettest month during the rainy season, which runs from October to April. Average temperatures range from 58 °F in July to 38 °F in December and January, with highs ranging from 96 °F in July to 54 °F in January. Although the "Delta Breeze" brings nights down to the upper 50s, summers are still hot, frequently reaching the upper 90s. Temperatures during heat waves might rise above 100 degrees. In the late fall and winter, Woodland has colder temperatures, rain from storms in the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Alaska, tule fog, and chilly mornings. Daytime highs are typically in the 40s or low 50s during prolonged fog spells.

From the First Friday Art Walk to the renowned Yolo County Fair in August and the lasting Sacramento Valley Scottish Games & Festival in April, Woodland provides a wide range of leisure activities. Visitors to Woodland can learn about its history at the Stroll Through History event in September, while the annual Woodland Dynamite Chili Cook-off offers chili samples and family-friendly activities. A whopping 30,000 people attend the city's Christmas parade, which is a huge holiday event. Visitors can explore museums like the Woodland Opera House, Reiff's Antique Gas Station Automotive Museum, Yolo County Historical Museum, and the Heidrick Ag History Center. The old opera theater is used as a cultural venue for diverse concerts, while Woodland's Carnegie-funded public library has been in existence since 1905.

The Woodland Joint Unified School District offers a variety of elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as a charter school, a continuation high school, and an adult education center, making up the diverse educational environment in Woodland. Dedicated trustees oversee the district's administration. Along with the public schools, Woodland is home to a number of private schools, including Cornerstone Christian Academy, Holy Rosary Parish School, Montessori Children's House, Woodland Adventist School, and Woodland Christian School. Under the administration of the Yuba Community College District, Woodland Community College offers a fully accredited college education.

Agriculture plays a significant role in Woodland's economy. The needs of agriculture make the transportation sector essential. In recent years, Woodland has encouraged the growth of an industrial sector that includes manufacturing and warehouses, particularly building modular homes. The city serves as a center for warehousing for important retail chains. Due to its proximity to Sacramento, small-town charm, and easy connectivity via highways and trains, the neighborhood saw a significant increase in property values in the early 2000s. Businesses are drawn to Woodland due to its proximity to Sacramento and San Francisco metro cities.
