Hercules, situated along the San Pablo Bay coast in western Contra Costa County, is in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area, approximately 10 miles north of Berkeley and 4 miles southwest of the Carquinez Bridge. It's about 12 miles north of Berkeley, 18 miles north of Oakland, and 22 miles northeast of San Francisco. Refugio Creek flows northwest through Hercules and meets the shoreline.

Since 2015, 3 to 5 storey mixed-use buildings have been built in the waterfront area, which is earmarked for greater density transit-oriented development and community shopping. Away from Highway 80, there are gently sloping hills and suburbs that were mainly built in the 1970s and 1980s. These areas are referred to locally by different names depending on the subdivision's street naming practices. Since the 1980s, newer projects including Victoria by the Bay/New Pacific, Olympian Hills, Hercules by the Bay, Village Park, and the Waterfront have been sprouting up along the shoreline's smoother but still undulating terrain.

The WestCat bus system meets the need for public transportation by connecting Hercules with neighboring areas like Rodeo, Pinole, and Richmond and providing express trips to Martinez and the El Cerrito del Norte BART station. Despite the fact that Hercules lacks a direct rail connection because of industrial changes, starting construction on a Hercules station along the Capitol Corridor line is expected to be finished by 2018.
