Richmond is a city located in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, in western Contra Costa County, California, United States. Along with other unincorporated areas such North Richmond, Hasford Heights, Kensington, El Sobrante, Bayview-Montalvin Manor, Tara Hills, and East Richmond Heights, it borders San Pablo, Albany, El Cerrito, and Pinole. In addition, Richmond is one of just two towns—the other is San Rafael—that are situated on the edges of San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay, and it touches San Francisco for a brief period of time on Red Rock Island in the San Francisco Bay.

Numerous enterprises have left their mark on Richmond's economic history, including a dynamite and gunpowder works, the last American whaling station, and one of the largest wineries that was forced to close by Prohibition. Richmond significantly expanded as a heavy industrial town with a shipbuilding industry during World War II. Millions of tons of goods, mostly oil and petroleum products, are transported through Port Richmond each year as the city prospers as a seaport.

A reconstructed World War II Victory ship, the USS Red Oak Victory, is berthed in the former Richmond Shipyard No. 3. The Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park pays tribute to the contributions made by women during the conflict. The municipal hall and library are two of the civic facilities housed at the Richmond Civic Center. Offshore, guests can explore Brooks Island Regional Preserve and East Brother Light Station. A radio-controlled model airplane airfield and various cemeteries are also available in the city.

With a vast network of roadways connecting it to nearby cities, including Interstate 80 and Interstate 580 as well as the Bay Bridge to San Francisco, Richmond has excellent transportation options. Richmond Station, which serves BART and Amtrak lines, is the city's main transportation center. Additionally, there are cargo rail yards, ferry services to San Francisco, and various bus lines run by AC Transit. Richmond is, likewise, dedicated to fostering bike- and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, as shown by the creation of the Richmond Greenway and San Francisco Bay Trail.
