Situated along Santa Monica Bay, the South Coast is home to the city of Santa Monica, which is part of Los Angeles County. Situated on a largely level hill that slopes southward into Ocean Avenue, the city is surrounded by steep cliffs that divide its northern portion from the beaches. To the north and south of it are Pacific Palisades and Venice, respectively, while to the west lies a picturesque 3-mile stretch of shoreline that hugs Santa Monica Bay. The Los Angeles neighborhoods of Brentwood and West Los Angeles are to the east.

Located along Santa Monica Bay, Santa Monica has an average of 310 sunny days per year and a coastal semi-arid climate. Known by the names "May Gray" and "June Gloom," morning fog usually disappears by noon during the summer. There is daily fog in the winter, and the temperature is five to ten degrees Fahrenheit lower than it is in inland locations in the summer. The maximum temperatures are recorded in September, and hot, dry Santa Ana winds are experienced during the winter. Rainfall is experienced from late October to late March, with erratic annual totals and sporadic dry spells. Santa Monica's air is kept cleaner by cool ocean breezes, yet smog can become an issue during Santa Ana wind occurrences. The city's climate data shows a wide range of temperature extremes and rainfall variations, but it has never experienced snow or frost.

With Olympic gold medalists from the Santa Monica Track Club and host of sporting events like the 1984 Summer Olympics' men's and women's marathons, Santa Monica is a destination for a wide range of recreational activities. Based here are the Pacific Rugby Premiership-winning Santa Monica Rugby Club and Southern California Aquatics, founded by Olympic swimmers Clay Evans and Bonnie Adair. The city is scheduled to host surfing and beach volleyball in the 2028 Summer Olympics. Palisades Park, situated on the bluffs, and Tongva Park, which offers a range of facilities, offer picturesque and leisurely areas. One popular place to work out outside is the Santa Monica Stairs, and Ishihara Park, which opened in 2017, serves as a barrier between the residential area and the Los Angeles Metro Rail.

In Santa Monica, public education is managed by the Santa Monica–Malibu Unified School District, which offers K–8 programs like SMASH (Santa Monica Alternative School House). Alternative options include attending a private school, such as Saint Monica Catholic High School or Crossroads School. First established in 1929, Santa Monica College is a well-known community college from which many students move to the University of California system. In addition, the city is home to organizations like the Art Institute of California–Los Angeles and the Frederick S. Pardee RAND Graduate School. Beyond, a 22-mile radius has a multitude of universities and colleges that improve the educational environment for locals, including UCLA and Loyola Marymount University.

Santa Monica is home to an extensive transit system. The city promotes bicycle commuting and has been recognized for its bike-friendly activities thanks to its extensive cycling infrastructure and bike-sharing program. High traffic volumes are experienced on the Santa Monica Freeway (Interstate 10), which links the city to downtown Los Angeles. Among the city's motorized vehicles is the avant-garde ZeroTruck, a medium-duty truck that runs entirely on electricity. Public transportation is aided by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (Metro) buses and the Big Blue Bus, a local service. Since it opened in 2016, the Expo Line extension from Culver City to Santa Monica has improved rail accessibility. The general aviation Santa Monica Airport is owned by the city as well. The Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles are Santa Monica's main ports. To further diversify transportation options, micro-mobility options such as dockless scooters are available.
