When Should You Change the Locks at Your Rental Property

Did you recently invest in your first rental property and are wondering when you should change the locks? If so, you’ve come to the right place!

As the Best Property Management Company in Ventura we can tell you that there are a variety of reasons you can use for changing the locks to your rental property including the following:

Your Tenant Abandoned the Property

Let’s say that it’s October and your tenant has paid their lease until the end of the month, but they moved out by October 10th and they didn’t return the keys to your rental property.

In this case, you should change the locks. You just don’t know where those keys are now or who may have access to them.

You Had Contractors Working on Your Rental Property

Another great reason to change the locks at your rental property in Ventura is if you had contractors working on your rental property recently and you gave them access to the property by placing a lockbox on the front door with a key.

Although most contractors are honest, it’s a good idea to change the locks after they’ve finished their work. You don’t know how many subcontractors they had working on the property, and who had access to the keys.

Your Locks Are Easy to Re-key

If the locks on your rental property are easy to re-key this is another great reason to change the locks to a lock which has a patented key. Doing this means that your future tenants will not be able to easily create keys to the locks themselves unless they ask you first to send a locksmith over to rekey the locks for them.

You Want to Ensure Your Future Tenants Safety

Thanks to FBI Crime statistics, we know that close to 74% of burglaries in the United States have occurred at residential properties so another great way to ensure the safety of your future tenants is to change the locks on your rental property each time your old tenant moves out.
