The American city of Chula Vista is located in San Diego County, California. Its name was derived from the Spanish term which means "beautiful view." The community is situated almost midway (7.5 miles) between the two downtowns of San Diego and Tijuana in the South Bay, one of the culturally diverse regions of the United States. Chula Vista's picturesque setting between San Diego Bay and the coastal mountain foothills is the reason for its moniker.

The communities in Chula Vista each have unique qualities. The region west of Hilltop Drive and north of L Street is referred to as West Chula Vista, whereas East Chula Vista is home to planned communities including Eastlake, Otay Ranch, Millenia, and Rancho del Rey. Beginning in 1986 with Eastlake, Rancho del Rey followed in 1989, and Otay Ranch in 1999. The term "Eastlake" is sometimes used to describe a bigger suburban area along SR 125 due to the misunderstanding that it refers to the larger Lower Otay Reservoir. Around 2008, wealthy families from Tijuana relocated to East Chula Vista to flee crime in their own country, adding to the neighborhood's Mexican population. Otay Mesa Port of Entry and Downtown San Diego are connected by a new Rapid bus line that travels via eastern Chula Vista.

The city's economic stability is based in large part on this varied community. With attractions like the U.S., Otay Valley Regional Park, and Chula Vista Nature Center, tourism is another major economic driver in the city. attracting tourists to the Olympic Training Center. While Chula Vista Center is the primary commercial location, the Chula Vista Marina hosts marine events. The major employment in the city include businesses, medical facilities, and educational organizations, demonstrating its diverse economic environment.

The Chula Vista Elementary School District oversees the majority of the city's educational system, with a tiny fraction falling under the National Elementary School District. The Sweetwater Union High School District is responsible for managing the secondary level. The Chula Vista Elementary School District, which serves students in kindergarten through sixth grade on 44 campuses, is the largest K–6 district in California. Southwestern College, a community college with an annual enrollment of over 19,000 students, is also located in the city. Despite the fact that Chula Vista has been attempting to establish a university since 1986, recent efforts have included buying land for a University Park and Research Center. Assembly member Shirley Weber has suggested that this facility serves as a satellite or extension campus of the California State University system with the potential to develop into a full-fledged university.

Numerous Interstates and California State Routes provide access to Chula Vista. To the south of the city, Interstate 5 starts, and it passes through the western part of the city. Chula Vista and North County are connected by Interstate 5, which also leads to Greater Los Angeles and Northern California. The Sorrento Valley section of Interstate 805 connects to Interstate 5 as a bypass. One of three auxiliary three-digit Interstates that cross an international boundary is Interstate 905, which originates at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. Highways State Routes 54 and 125 connect to East County cities via northern and northeastern axes.
