With an average annual rainfall of about 14 inches, the rainy season runs from late October to late March. Hermosa Beach has less smog than other areas of Los Angeles as a result of the refreshing ocean breeze.

In contrast to nearby cities, Hermosa Beach also owns its beach. Local elementary and middle schools are available to Hermosa Beach locals, while children in high school attend Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach institutions of learning. Hermosa View Elementary (K-2) and Hermosa Vista Elementary (grades 3-4) are run by the city's Hermosa Beach City School District, as are Hermosa Valley Middle (grades 5-8). Students in high school have the option of attending Manhattan Beach's Mira Costa High School or Redondo Beach's Redondo Union High School. A Catholic school in Hermosa Beach that provides instruction from kindergarten through eighth grade is called Our Lady of Guadalupe School.
