The abundance of artesian wells in Cypress earned it the nickname "Waterville" at first. Local dairy farmers wanted to protect their fields from invading developers, so they established Cypress as Dairy City in 1956, emulating nearby cities Dairyland in La Palma and Dairy Valley in Cerritos. Rising land prices following World War II caused dairies to gradually sell out to home developers in the 1960s, and by the 1970s, there were no more dairies. Residents decided to alter the name to Cypress in 1957 to better reflect the school's changing identity. The decision was motivated by Cypress Elementary School, which is shielded from seasonal winds by cypress trees. The Cypress Community Festival was first held in 1981 and is currently one of Orange County's biggest one-day events. It takes place every year on the fourth Saturday of July in Oak Knoll Park.
