The US state of California's Los Angeles County is home to the city of Rolling Hills on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. On all other sides (including the vacant Portuguese Bend landslide region to the south), the city borders Rancho Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills Estates to the north and south, respectively.

Rolling Hills is characterized by single-story 19th-century California ranch or Spanish hacienda-style homes, as famously designed by architect Wallace Neff. Established in 1957, the community's essence lies in its rural and equestrian ambiance, devoid of traffic signals, featuring expansive multi-acre lots with generous spacing between residences, and encompassing broad equestrian trails along streets and property boundaries. With the third highest median home value in the nation, residences in Rolling Hills are mandated to showcase white exteriors. Homeowners must also maintain equestrian facilities on their lots or, at a minimum, retain land suitable for stable construction. AE Hanson, the developer behind Hidden Hills, played a pivotal role in shaping the community's landscape.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District (PVPUSD), well known for continuously earning high rankings in both California and the country, is in charge of overseeing education in Rolling Hills. Since 2013, Palos Verdes Peninsula High School has consistently been on the Washington Post's list of "America's Most Challenging Schools," even holding down the eighth place nationally at one point. Palos Verdes Peninsula High School was ranked as California's ninth-best public high school in 2016 by the website Niche.com, which collects data on schools. The renowned Chadwick School, a 45-acre, independent K–12 institution that serves the neighborhood, adds to the diversity of educational options. In 2014, Business Insider named Chadwick as one of the top private high schools in the country based on rankings from niche.com.

In Rolling Hills Estates, the seasons are lengthy and cool with partly cloudy winters and warm, arid summers with bright skies. Variations in temperature throughout the year normally vary from 50° to 77°F, rarely falling below 44° or exceeding 84°F. Average daily high temperatures rise above 74°F during the warmer months of July 7 to October 7, with August being the hottest month with an average high of 76°F and low of 64°F. On the other side, the colder season, which lasts from November 29 to April 7, with daily highs that are typically below 66°F. The coldest month of the year, December, averages highs of 64°F and lows of 50°F.
