Wilmington is a 9.14 square mile neighborhood located in Los Angeles, California's South Bay and Harbor area. Wilmington's neighbors include Harbor City to the northwest, Carson to the north, Long Beach to the east, and San Pedro to the south and west.

Wilmington is home to various noteworthy attractions, such as the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, which during the Civil War functioned as the Southern California and Arizona territory headquarters of the US Army. When the city was opened, its entry was marked by the famous neon sign that read "THE DON." Wilmington's environment includes notable locations including the original Der Wienerschnitzel restaurant and the Phillips 66 refinery, which is home to the "world's largest jack-o'-lantern." The historic 23-room Banning Museum was constructed in 1864 by Wilmington's founder and renowned "Father of the Port of Los Angeles," Phineas Banning.

Compared to the city and county averages, Wilmington people aged 25 and over had poorer educational attainment, with a higher percentage having less than a high school diploma. In 2000, just 5.1% of them had earned a four-year degree. Wilmington is nevertheless home to the Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy, ranked as the fourth-best high school in California and the finest in Los Angeles. Wilmington, which is a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, is home to educational institutions such as Wilmington Middle School, Avalon High School, and Phineas Banning Senior High School. Los Angeles Harbor College also serves the area. The Los Angeles Public Library, which runs the Wilmington Branch Library, adds to the community's collection of educational materials.

Diverse recreational areas may be found in Wilmington, like the Banning Recreation Center, which has amenities like a play area, basketball courts, and a baseball diamond. Indoor basketball courts and educational programs are available at the East Wilmington Greenbelt Community Center. The Wilmington Recreation Center has a community room, basketball courts, baseball diamonds, and an auditorium among its features. A baseball diamond, basketball courts, a play area, an indoor gym, and tennis courts are just a few of the amenities offered by the Wilmington Senior Citizen Center. Despite its misleading name—it's not actually on the waterfront—the Wilmington Waterfront Park, which completed in 2011, expands the recreational options available in the city.
