You know that locals call our city Ventura, for short, but did you know that the city’s “formal name” is actually San Buenaventura? That’s right. The name comes from Mission San Buenaventura, an actual Spanish Mission that was established way back in 1782 by the late Father Junipero Serra.
What’s cool about Ventura’s history is that you can actually tour the original mission because it’s still standing in the historic district of Downtown Ventura.
Today’s it’s a loved and well-visited tourist spot that tourists have on their list of hotspots to visit in Ventura when they are touring the city.
Father Junipero Serra was also named a Saint by Pope Francis back in 2015 so the historic mission has so much more meaning than ever before.
